Mickey 17 (2025)

We made a cinema trip out of this one, and it was good! I’d like to read the book at some point to see how it compares, but in general i had a good time watching this film.

A couple of things to note. First, it could have been shorter. In my eyes, a film has really got to earn a run time over ninety minutes, and the 137 minutes here could easily have been tightened up a bit as there were some slow or dull moments.

Second, i couldn’t work out if the film wanted to be a serious film, or parody, or both. The main antagonist was clearly a caricature of certain powerful americans, and his wife was… something. The whole side plot of his wife being obsessed with making sauce out of living aliens was weird and frankly unnecessary. Maybe some people thought it was an important element of the plot but i didn’t vibe with it at all.

At its core, the film already had a solid premise about the value of human life, class issues, and how business can interfere in law and morality. I would have been perfectly happy with the film if it was left at that.

But even with my complaints, i think it was a good watch, and if you happen to have 137 minutes (!) to kill, it’s a choice to consider.
