The sinking of the Lisbon Maru (2023)

Sometimes, what you need is a nice documentary, and this is one possibility. It’s about a boat’s life during world war two, and the lives of the imprisoned soldiers onboard, the japanese soldiers in control, and the chinese fishermen who helped to protect them.

I’d never heard of the boat before, so it was all new to me, and the story was fascinating. There were some slow moments, but it’s a documentary so that’s not unexpected. It also featured a lot of emotional moments.

There was definitely a particular narrative pushed, but the film also interviewed some japanese people and didn’t have too aggressive a stance towards them for the actions of their ancestors.

If you like documentaries and learning about world war two, you’d probably like this film.
